Let me introduce myself. I am Kathleen Johnsen and with over 19 years leading the human resources team at Pebble Beach Resorts, I bring vast knowledge and experience in all facets of talent management and quality HR services to my clients.

I am a true generalist in all facets of human resources management. Here's a sampling of my credentials and accomplishments:
Labor Law Created new policies and drafted several handbooks in response to current and upcoming labor regulations and laws. Conducted regular compliance audits. Trained managers in labor law. Compensation Developed and maintained a comprehensive compensation program for hourly and salaried positions. The program included an internal valuation system and external market analysis of more than 350 positions. Total Rewards In order to demonstrate the overall value of compensation and benefits, I designed and distributed personalized benefit statements to over 900 employees annually. Performance Management Created an evaluation system consistent with company values and culture. Conducted STOP/START/KEEP assessments to provide managers with insight into blind spots and improve management effectiveness. Training Designed and trained custom curriculum for on-boarding, orientation, and new managers. Conducted training in customer service, safety, labor law, harassment and diversity. Safety Designed and implemented an effective safety program in adherence to SB198 guidelines. Created Injury and Illness Prevention Programs in accordance with OSHA standards for all positions to ensure employees understood job safety requirements. Employee/Labor Relations Advised and trained managers in coaching/counseling skills. Facilitated conflict resolution in employee relations issues. I participated in three successful labor negotiations and numerous arbitration hearings. Investigations Conducted timely, thorough, and discreet investigations for a variety of issues to include harassment, EEOC, reasonable accommodation, and other employee issues. Engagement Surveys Administered and managed numerous employee engagement surveys. Collaborated with senior leadership to develop and implement follow-up actions for survey findings. Overall survey scores and participation rates increased from the prior survey each time. Creative Communications Created and published a quarterly employee newsletter and weekly company business updates. Developed a core communications strategy to provide consistent, timely, and meaningful messages. Assembled and managed the employee communications team for the 2000 and 2010 U.S. Opens. Retirement Plans Administered both 401k and defined benefit retirement plans for over 1,000 participants. When the decision was made to terminate the pension plans, I worked with outside actuaries to manage process from company side. Community Involvement I believe in giving back to my community by volunteering with the CSUMB Business Advisory Council, Monterey County Free Libraries Adult Literacy, Shoreline Community Church, and Community Homeless Solutions Women’s Shelter, and Monterey County Reads. |

I graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Business from Westmont College in Santa Barbara, CA. Additionally, I received my Certificate in Human Resources Management from Cal State Northridge.
Over the course of my career, I have held positions that have progressively provided me with more responsibility, and have required an increasing depth of knowledge and expertise. The last three years prior to starting my consulting business, I served as Vice President, Human Resources for Pebble Beach Company. Because I have worked on the client side of human resources for over 25 years, I consult from a practical, hands on perspective. In addition to my last nineteen years in the hospitality industry, I also have extensive knowledge and experience in retail, food & beverage, manufacturing, distribution and service industries. |
